Our Mission

The mission of ABADÁ-Capoeira Alaska (ACAK) is to share our vision of Capoeira and promote the Brazilian culture by offering professional instruction to people from all walks of life, age, gender and social backgrounds. Capoeira is a vehicle for growth and education that can help the individual by instilling principles of respect through its unique form of martial arts, raise self awareness through body expression and enrich their cultural lives by exposing them to a different culture through music and the Portuguese language.

Our commitment to the community is also maintained as we spread our art by performing at cultural festivals, events and venues. We strive to help individuals from all backgrounds by offering a variety of courses ranging from community work to after-school programs in order to build strong, confident and culturally oriented people. We seek to inspire our students and to help them find their own means of expression as well as to build them up as productive members of society through the Brazilian art form of Capoeira.

ABADÁ Capoeira Alaska is based in Fairbanks, and as an organization we promote the family values of respect, community and cooperation. We encourage our students through our love for the art with the knowledge that they will be the Capoeiristas of the future and great representatives of ABADÁ's philosophy and competent professionals in their field of work.

Our Instructor

Instructor Côco (Marcelo Fagundes) was born in São Paulo, Brazil and began training Capoeira at the age of nine in Curitiba, Paraná. At the age of 18 he began to teach Capoeira to children under Professor Piriquito Verde's supervision, becoming a pioneer in studying and developing a children-specific teaching methodology. After many years of teaching children and adults and traveling throughout Brazil, Instrutor Coco relocated to Mexico in 2003 where he founded the ABADA-Capoeira Guadalajara chapter. Instrutor Coco has performed extensively in Brazil and the United States. Some of his most recent performances include: Youtube Live & Spirit of Brazil in San Francisco and "Expresion en Corto" Film Festival in Guanajuato and San Miguel De Allende, Mexico. He has also been featured in Mexican media-mogul Televisa and most recently graced the cover of ABADA-Times Magazine.

Instructor Côco is currently doing an artist residency with ABADA-Capoeira San Francisco, training under world renowned Capoeirista Mestranda Marcia Cigarra. In addition to being a skillful Capoeirista, Instrutor Coco is an avid percussionist, and has performed with various dance troupes in Brazil and abroad. Instrutor Coco’s passion for Capoeira and charisma shine strongly through his work, his students and the twenty four years he has committed to the Art.

Instructor Côco currently holds a "roxa" (purple) belt from the ABADA Capoeira organization.
