Our Mission

The mission of ABADÁ-Capoeira Alaska (ACAK) is to share our vision of Capoeira and promote the Brazilian culture by offering professional instruction to people from all walks of life, age, gender and social backgrounds. Capoeira is a vehicle for growth and education that can help the individual by instilling principles of respect through its unique form of martial arts, raise self awareness through body expression and enrich their cultural lives by exposing them to a different culture through music and the Portuguese language.

Our commitment to the community is also maintained as we spread our art by performing at cultural festivals, events and venues. We strive to help individuals from all backgrounds by offering a variety of courses ranging from community work to after-school programs in order to build strong, confident and culturally oriented people. We seek to inspire our students and to help them find their own means of expression as well as to build them up as productive members of society through the Brazilian art form of Capoeira.

ABADÁ Capoeira Alaska is based in Fairbanks, and as an organization we promote the family values of respect, community and cooperation. We encourage our students through our love for the art with the knowledge that they will be the Capoeiristas of the future and great representatives of ABADÁ's philosophy and competent professionals in their field of work.

ABADA Capoeira

ABADÁ Capoeira is the foremost authority and the largest Capoeira entity in the world. As an international organization of over 60,000 members, ABADA Capoeira was founded in 1988 by world renown Master, Mestre Camisa, and is based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The letters ABADÁ-Capoeira are an acronym for Associação Brasileira de Apoio e Desenvolvimento da Arte Capoeira or the Brazilian Association for the Support and Development of the Art of Capoeira.

Mestre Camisa is one of the most prominent figures in the Capoeira world today, having developed his own philosophy and methodology by following the innovative concepts of his teacher, the great Master of Capoeira Regional, Mestre Bimba. Mestre Camisa's work does not only focuses on the rich traditions and teachings from the past, but goes further by evolving Capoeira and adapting the art form to the world of today. ABADÁ Capoeira not only strives to maintain the highest quality of Capoeira, but also to raise awareness of Brazil and its rich culture by organizing and participating in social campaigns that reach all sectors of the community in and out of Brazil.

The organization is driven by the life-long commitments of Mestre Camisa, his brother Grão Mestre Camisa Roxa, and all the Mestres and Mestrandos/as of the ABADÁ Capoeira family. Today, ABADÁ-Capoeira is the largest and most successful Capoeira organization in the world and is represented in all the states of Brazil and in 40 countries including Angola, Israel, Japan, Tahiti, Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, England, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Russia, Mexico, and the USA.

What is Capoeira?

CAPOEIRA (pronounced ka-poo-eh-ra) is a 400-year-old Brazilian martial art that combines acrobatics, dance, music, singing and body expression. The popularity of Capoeira has grown in such a way over the past few decades that is now practiced by over 8 million people around the world. In it's native Brazil, it's popularity has grown in such a way that it rivals the national sport of soccer. Capoeira offers a unique workout by it incorporating aerobic and anaerobic principles. As a social activity, it relies on the heavy participation of each individual to form a community of artists. Capoeira as a martial art promotes physical conditioning and awareness by engaging two players into a game called "jogo". By facing each other inside a circle called "roda" each practitioner develops a strategy to fool the other player and catch them off guard. This can be accomplished by employing kicks, sweeps or takedowns. The objective in Capoeira is for the practitioner to show the "upper hand" within the context of the game. The roda is a circle formed by the other players who create the rhythm for the game by clapping, singing and playing traditional instruments. This is how practitioners outside of the circle will also engage in the game, thus signifying the importance of each individual in and outside the roda.

History in a brief

Capoeira was born from the necessity of African slaves to free themselves from their Portuguese captors. As slaves they couldn't openly practice self-defense and therefore had to develop a system disguised as a dance that fooled their captors into thinking it was a ritualized form of expression with its particular music and folklore. Capoeira became their vehicle to freedom. It was through this Brazilian art form with African influence that the enslaved Africans were able to escape captivity and form their own communities called "Quilombos" away from Portuguese oppression. After the abolition of slavery in Brazil in 1888, Capoeira as means of expression went through difficult times as it was still associated with slavery and was breaking from social stigmas that kept the art from growing . It wasn't until the legendary Capoeira Mestre (Master) Bimba rescued the art form and proved its legitimacy by opening Capoeira's first official school in Bahia, Brazil in 1932, leading to its recognition as Brazil's National sport by President Gertulio Vargas.
